Why we started

Most "best VPN" lists are paid rankings in disguise. Niclas started VPN Runner after getting tired of lists that ranked whoever paid the most. He has spent more than ten years working in IT and networking, and he wanted a site where comparing published plans, prices, features and terms comes first and the recommendations follow from that comparison. We have not measured speeds.

How we compare

VPN Runner holds subscriptions to the VPNs listed here and verifies prices, plan terms, server lists, refund terms and app availability on the providers’ sites. We have not measured speeds.

Reader-supported, not advertiser-led

VPN Runner is reader-supported. If you sign up for a VPN through one of our links, we may earn a commission. It costs you nothing extra, and it never affects our rankings or scores. We would rather lose a commission than recommend a VPN that does not compare well on its published plans, prices, features and terms.

Built for Australians

VPNs are legal in Australia, and plenty of Australians use one every day. Australia’s data-retention laws mean metadata about your internet use can be stored by providers, which is one reason many Australians look for a VPN with a genuine no-logs policy. Others simply want to watch what they pay for: we compare every VPN on the streaming support its provider publishes for the services Australians actually use, including Netflix AU, Stan, BINGE and ABC iview, so you can check the provider’s documented platform support before you pay.
