About VPN Runner

We are an independent VPN comparison site. We are reader-supported: if you sign up for a VPN through one of our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings, and providers cannot pay their way to the top of a list.

How we compare

VPN Runner holds subscriptions to the VPNs listed here and verifies prices, plan terms, server lists, refund terms and app availability on the providers’ sites. We have not measured speeds.

A note on Canada

VPNs are legal in Canada, for personal use as well as business use. They are a reasonable tool under Canada’s privacy regime: federally, PIPEDA sets the rules for how companies handle your personal information, and Quebec’s Law 25 adds stricter consent and transparency requirements. A VPN does not make you anonymous and it does not exempt you from the law, but it does keep your browsing activity private from your internet provider and from trackers on public Wi-Fi.

Most of our Canadian readers compare VPNs for a few specific things: whether the provider publishes support for Netflix Canada, whether it states that Crave or CBC Gem can be reached while travelling, and what it publishes about streaming. Those are exactly the scenarios our comparisons are built around, using published plans, prices, features and terms on the providers’ sites. We have not measured speeds.

Who is behind VPN Runner

Niclas Borgström, founder. Niclas has spent more than a decade in IT and networking. He started VPN Runner because he was tired of "best VPN" lists that ranked whoever paid the most.

Alexa Obondo, editor.

Linnea Berg, content manager. Linnea writes our guides. She believes VPN advice should read like clear, practical guidance based on the providers’ published information.
