How to watch Netflix from another country

Netflix shows a different catalog in every country. Here is how a VPN lets you switch regions, why some servers fail, and which providers reliably unblock Netflix.

Netflix is not one library. The service licenses shows and films country by country, so a title that streams in Japan or the UK may be missing where you live, and vice versa. If you are travelling, living abroad, or simply curious about another region’s catalog, a VPN is the standard tool for switching your Netflix region. This guide explains how it works, why it sometimes does not, and how to fix the most common problems.

Why Netflix looks different abroad

When you open Netflix, the service checks your IP address to decide which country you are in and serves that region’s catalog. A VPN replaces your real IP address with one from a server in a country you choose, so connecting to a server in Canada makes Netflix treat you as a Canadian viewer and show the Canadian library.

This is not a hack or a loophole in any criminal sense. You still log in with your own paid account. What changes is the regional catalog you see. Note that streaming a region you are not normally entitled to may conflict with Netflix’s terms of service, so use your own judgement and a legitimate subscription.

You still need a Netflix account
A VPN changes which catalog you see. It does not give you free Netflix. You sign in with your normal account, and your watch history and profiles follow you wherever you connect.

Choosing a VPN that actually unblocks Netflix

Netflix actively detects and blocks IP addresses it associates with VPNs and data centers. Cheaper or free VPNs are usually blocked within days, leaving you staring at the dreaded proxy error. The providers that work consistently invest in fresh IP addresses and, in some cases, dedicated streaming servers tuned to slip past those blocks.

Step by step: switch your Netflix region

  1. 1
    Install the VPN

Sign up with a reputable provider and install its app on the device you watch Netflix on, such as your laptop, phone, or tablet.

  2. 2
    Connect to a server

Open the app and connect to a server in the country whose catalog you want. For example, choose the UK to access the British library.

  3. 3
    Clear cache and reload

Fully close the Netflix app or browser tab, then reopen it so it picks up your new location.

  4. 4
    Sign in and browse

Log in as normal. You should now see the catalog for the country you connected to.

  5. 5
    Switch any time

To change regions, disconnect, pick another country’s server, and reload Netflix again.

Fixing the Netflix proxy error

If you see error code M7111-5059 or a message about a proxy or unblocker, Netflix has flagged your VPN server. This is common and usually easy to fix.

  • Switch servers. Try a different server in the same country. Providers with dedicated streaming servers refresh these IPs regularly.
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies, or sign out and back in on the app.
  • Disable IPv6 and WebRTC leaks. If your device leaks your real location outside the tunnel, Netflix sees a mismatch. Good VPN apps block this automatically.
  • Try the website instead of the app, or vice versa, as detection can differ between them.
  • Contact support. The best providers will tell you exactly which servers are working for Netflix today.
Free VPNs rarely work
Free VPNs almost always get blocked by Netflix, throttle your speed, and may log or sell your data. For streaming, a reputable paid VPN is the only reliable route.

Speed and quality tips

Switching regions is no good if the picture buffers. To keep playback smooth, connect to a nearby server when the catalog allows it, choose providers with fast protocols like WireGuard or Lightway, and stream over a wired or 5GHz Wi-Fi connection. If 4K stutters, drop to a closer server or lower the Netflix data-usage setting in your account.

Frequently asked questions

Is using a VPN with Netflix illegal?

In most countries it is not illegal to use a VPN, but accessing another region’s catalog may breach Netflix’s terms of service. Use your own account and judgement.

Will a VPN slow down Netflix?

A little, because traffic is encrypted and rerouted. With a fast provider and a well-chosen server the difference is usually unnoticeable.

Can I use one VPN account on several devices?

Yes. Most providers allow multiple simultaneous connections, so you can cover your laptop, phone, and TV at once.

Why did my VPN work yesterday but not today?

Netflix continually blocks VPN IPs. Switch to another server, or pick a provider that refreshes its streaming IPs frequently.
